"Akron" Arlen Vanke was a working-man's drag racer. Competing--and winning--in the Stock, Super Stock and Pro Stock classes, he set records with Pontiacs and, later, Plymouths, earning multiple Stock Eliminator titles with both marques. Through it all, he built the cars in a backyard garage and often drove his open ramp truck to the track and back. In fact, Chrysler hired Vanke to test their performance technology. In 1967, Arlen modified the RO23 Hemi intake manifold for racing. "NHRA rules allowed racers to modify the intake manifold, so I made the stock manifold into a plenum chamber manifold, " he said. . Vanke's Hemi, along with the Sox & Martin team, gave Mopars so many victories in the late '60s that they dominated the scene in Super Stocks. In 1968, he built this incredible HEMI Cuda that we are so proud to offer. He won the Nationals in August at Indy running SS/B with his 1968 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. He then reset the record again with a 10.61 at 140 miles per hour in the Cuda in SS/A at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, California. . . Special Offer!! We pack with care as well! .The story is told of George Manessis, a Northern California NHRA Super Stock racer who wanted more. With help from Chrysler and San Francisco's Sunset Dodge, a '64 Dodge "Ramcharger" 330 sedan was ordered with the goal of competing and dominating in SS/A--a hotly contested class where the Max Wedge Mopars dominated. Manessis would line up against the SS/A drag racing legends--names including the other Mopar-sponsored Northern California Max Wedge of Tommy Grove in the Melrose Missile sponsored by Melrose Motors of Oakland, California. Manessis would mark his years in the Sunset Dodge entry, which was later re-lettered in Van Ness Dodge nomenclature, with a fair degree of success, including an event win at the Northern California SS/A Championship. In addition to the quickest e.t. George ever made--a 11.14/126 pass--the sedan competed at legendary lanes of asphalt and concrete such as Cotati, Half Moon Bay, and Fremont. At these coastal California drag strips, the dense, cool air helped create the spectacle of Max Wedge domination. Sometime after a build date of February 17, 1964, Manessis took delivery of his Dodge 330 and began to campaign the aluminum-paneled sedan. With its hinged aluminum hood; dual hump aluminum hoodscoop; aluminum fenders; aluminum bumper brackets; and acid-dipped components including the front bumper, doors and decklid, all seemed well. But looming at the Daytona Speedweeks in February 1964 and then on the April '64 cover of Hot Rod Magazine was Chrysler's new "Modern Hemi." . Special Offer!! Note:  The Drag Car shown in the photos is not included. . Donald Glenn "Don" Garlits (born January 14, 1932, Tampa, Florida) is an American drag racing driver and automotive engineer and is considered the father of drag racing. He is known as "Big Daddy" to drag racing fans around the world. Always a pioneer in the field of drag racing, he perfected the rear-engine "top fuel dragster design", an innovation motivated by the loss of part of his foot in a dragster accident. This design was notably safer, since it put most of the fuel processing and rotating parts of the dragster behind the driver. The driver was placed in "clear air," in front of nearly all the mechanical components, thus protecting the driver and allowing him to activate a variety of safety equipment in the event of catastrophic mechanical failure or a fire. Garlits was also an early promoter of the full-body, fire-resistant driver's suit - complete with socks and gloves, often branded as Nomex. Garlits was the first drag racer to officially surpass the 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, and 270 miles per hour marks in the quarter mile; he was also the first to top 200 in the 1/8 mile. He has been inducted into several Halls of Fame and has won many awards during his career. . Special Offer!! Order this item and we will include a $10.00 Credit good towards any future purchase! . In February 1968, Chrysler took the performance philosophy of “small car, big engine” to whole a new level. The company told Dodge dealerships across the country that it would sell race-ready factory-built dragsters using the smallest coupe in the fleet, the Dodge Dart. The small car would be equipped with the biggest motor in the Mopar arsenal, and the result was the remarkable Super Stock Dodge Dart. A purpose-built dragster strictly for the track Gene "the Snowman" Snow will remain in the history books as the first Funny Car driver to break the 200-mph barrier with a 200.88 clocking on Aug. 17, 1968, and the first Top Fuel driver to break the four-second barrier at an NHRA national event, Oct. 6, 1988. . Anyone witnessing the strip-shaking performances of today's 275-mph 5-second AA/Funny Cars will find it difficult to connect those thundering acceleration machines with the purely pedestrian daily drivers found in a typical new-car dealer's showroom. But by winding back the timers to the mid-'60s, the relationship between these contemporary competition cars and yesterday's store-bought "grocery getters" can be seen more clearly. Chrysler's corporate drag racing efforts went extreme in 1965 with a handful of purpose-built drag machines born of the muscle car era's "win at all costs" mentality. The 1965 Plymouth Factory Altered Wheelbase cars and their Dodge counterparts resulted from a cutthroat battle between Ford and Chrysler for victory in the NHRA's Super Stock and A/Factory Experimental A/FX classes. . Don Grotheer may not be a household name, but he was a Super Stock NHRA/AHRA heavy hitter during the 1960s.  Grotheer started racing a black ’63 Plymouth followed by a white ’63 Plymouth AA/Stock eliminator in 1965. He was able to win the AA/S championship, which caught the attention of Bob Cahill, product planner, and manager of Chrysler’s drag racing program. Cahill provided Grotheer a parts contract. Grotheer was also enlisted to conduct performance clinics at Chrysler dealerships (along with Sox & Martin and Dick Landy) and he did over 75 of them. He was also a pioneer of the Pro Stock class in its infancy. In 1967, Grotheer raced a '67 Plymouth Belvedere and won the Winternationals class eliminations, securing another Division Championship. Grotheer went on and won again in 1967 then again at the ’69 Winternationals in his Super Stock/B Automatic Cuda with B&M “secret weapons” transmission parts and “race-stall tork-converter.” Always an innovator, he continued to race for many more years.  .
